This is a nature lover's park with many opportunities to observe wildlife and explore the outdoors. The property borders seven miles of the Tippecanoe River. Camping, rent a camp cabins, shelters, recreation building, canoeing, hiking, bridle trails and fishing are among the most popular attractions. Amenities onsite include: a dump station, partial and full hookup sites, sewerage, horse camping, water and tent sites. Travelers can also look forward to activities such as: biking, hiking, horseback riding, sunset viewing and stargazing. Just beyond the campground, there's a ton of great local attractions to enjoy.

When it comes to camping in Texas, there's no off-season. Even during winter, the camping grounds at several Texas State Parks fill up with families and friends trying to get outdoors to enjoy cooler temps.

Camping can reduce stress and symptoms of depression, according to several reports from the mental health website the Health Sessions and the Huffington Post. While you can go to a park or go hiking, the one aspect of camping that is great is the ability to unwind from and block out the modern-day world.

Research also points out how camping can improve focus and increase energy levels. Based on how I feel when I'm outdoors, I can attest to this. Camping is next on my list to get that freeing feeling of being outdoors in Texas.

The Texas and Parks and Wildlife Department does have workshop classes where they provide all the equipment for families and teach them how to set up a tent, cook outdoors, build a campfire, and play outside. While the classes aren't scheduled during the winter, TPWD encourages Texans to experience the outdoors before potential freezing temperatures hit later this winter.

We spoke with Thomas Wilhelm with the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department to find the top places to camp in the San Antonio area.
