Hey Gab, I am a white man and my wife is mixed.
John EdwardsII is wrong.
It is difficult to lump the entire 'north' and 'south' into absolute patterns of behavior, but we experienced a lot of racism in Mississippi and Alabama (college) and in some rural places in NC. My cousin is mixed and lives in NJ and said she never had any issues with people, except when she visited family in Smithfield, NC. We never experience this type of reaction/treatment when visiting family in Minnesota, though I did notice it in upstate NY. I have a number of friends in Mississippi who dated girls only to have them break it off after their parents disapproved. At my school we had a lot of students from Memphis and they had some serious race issues there. The way we were treated in Memphis was also just really strange.
With that being said, most places in NC are safe/good/you won't notice it. Especially in the triangle, Charlotte, and other areas mentioned. I live in Clayton and there are so many mixed relationships it's normal now. Growing up - about 10 years ago - was when this started to break through into the norm.
If you move to TN I would stay away from Memphis - lots of N words in my personal experience, and an argument among students that split along color lines like I've never seen anywhere else. I haven't been in KY or Knoxville/Nashville/etc. enough to comment on those.
Charleston, Myrtle Beach, and Greenville SC are also good options.

I would also look into Greenville, SC. Greenville, along with Asheville and Portland, ME, are my favorite three cities on the east side of the country. Greenville is politically conservative, but is economically dynamic with a lot more going on than in the Tri-Cities. Well said, jmarquise.
Guestposter24, your attempts to keep all newcomers from moving here would be more convicing if you showed a bit of respect for their backgrounds. You cannot adequately deny that Greenville is a very diverse and continually diversifying city with people from virtually every background imaginable. Sure, you could likely find more people in the metro from a particular 'mold,' but that is rapidly changing, and nothing anyone says will change it from happening. The best bet for someone who doesn't want change is to learn to accept it. If that is not an option (because someone is too hard headed), then there are other places to live where change is an uncommon occurrance... you have the freedom to move there.
FYI: BJU's presence in the city is not as negatively affective as outsiders assume it is. When it comes to certain important elements of society, such as the Fine Arts for example, the school has greatly enhanced Greenville's passion and status.
